SOUTH OF FRANCE

South of France
We’ve just spent the past week in the south of France having a mini holiday inside of our big trip, we thought we deserved it…!
The campsite we found is on the outskirts of Frejus right on the river. To be honest, when we first arrived we were ready for bolting as soon as we parked the car up, the site is one of those big holiday parks with hundreds of pitches (its this one), a swimming pool and bar area with chalets to rent out too. It’s not really our cup of tea but the price out of season is very reasonable, its in a good location to visit everywhere along the coast and because it is still low season for us, we have ended up having a really nice and quiet stay. Who’d have thought! And the showers/toilets are the best we’ve had yet so we can’t really complain. I dread to think about the bedlam in summer holidays though. After we talked ourselves into staying, we said we’d stay for 4 nights maximum which then turned into a week but then we checked the weather for our next campsite and its thunderstorms and rain for the next few days so we’re actually moving on on Wednesday. Extended holiday!
South of France Our first day out was to St Tropez which is such a beautiful place, very quaint and lively.

So many yachts were moored with the workers cleaning cleaning cleaning and then cleaning some more.

We visited Cannes - literally just missed the film festival by a day! The views from the church on the hill were so worth the climb up there.

Cannes is very beautiful too, lovely old buildings and winding cobbles streets. We enjoyed mooching around both places, exploring and taking it all in.

And then we went to Monaco.
South of France
We woke up early to set off as we wanted to go to Nice in the same day and while Steven was checking his phone before we headed off he noticed it was only the Grand Prix weekend! We weren’t sure what to expect or if we’d even get close to Monaco with the traffic but luckily it was the Friday so no F1 races but there was GP2 and some Porsche races going on. We managed to park up no problem in the train station car park - it was easier getting in to Monaco on Grand Prix weekend then London on a normal day!

We legged it out the car and followed some people down the road who had official looking maps and found ourselves sat in the stands directly opposite the Monte Carlo Casino just in time for the GP2 race! To be honest it was just as good as watching the real thing for us, the cars were loud and its hard to tell what’s going on anyway as they go so fast but we were pretty excited.

After a few laps we decided to take a walk to see if we could see anything else, or get a little closer.

We walked down to the grand stand just as the race was finishing and everyone was emptying out so we popped in to have a look around and see what the seats were like. The grand stand is directly opposite the pit lanes so we sat and watched them working away for a while (no sign of Lewis or Jenson, boo!) and then they opened up the track!

We walked round the track back up to the casino and to the car. The whole day cost us €12 for parking for 5 hours and that was it! What a day we had.
On the way back we popped into Nice for a pizza and a mooch around. I was quite surprised with how much we enjoyed Nice, I don’t really know what I was expecting but its such a great city.

It reminded me a little of Manchester, it had a similar vibe and we’d definitely like to visit again for a city break.

And then we’ve had a couple of days at the tent, relaxing and reading and stocking up on pastries - we best do as who knows when we’ll get the next one?!
We’ve had a really lovely week in the south of France but its almost time for us to make our way into Italy. More pizza!!

ARDÉCHE REGION

Pont d'Arc Camping le Clapas
After spending 4 nights in the Dordogne region we headed further East to a campsite in the Ardéche area, we found the site in Cool Camping and figured it would be a good stop off before we head down to the south coast. It was the longest drive we’ve done yet on this trip - 6 and a half hours, and it was one of scariest drives too! We had to go directly through the middle of the parc national des Cévennes so we were right up in the mountains on these little windy roads with no barriers either side. The French obviously think this is just like any other road and still drive at 100km per hour, whilst on their phones and eating a sandwich. Casual. Even though it was scary the views were unbelievable. We stayed at Camping Le Clapas which is situated right on the Ardéche river with its own little private beach and it was a really lovely campsite. The man on reception (not sure if he was the owner) was the nicest French person we’ve met, so helpful and very welcoming.

We soon figured that the area is very much aimed towards holiday makers, there were campsites all over the place but luckily ours was a nice small one with barely anyone about. The biggest draw of this location is canoeing and kayaking, where we were on the river there seems to be a stretch of light rapids and some amazing views along the way. We took a walk into Vallon Pont d'arc one day where they were having a market selling the usual err… products, that you would find at any market in any country.

We ordered pastries and baguettes most mornings at the campsite and enjoyed some time at the tent, catching up on washing and reading our books.

A short drive away from the campsite is Pont d’Arc which is so beautiful, we took a little picnic of more bread, more cheese, more butter and some crisps and ate it down on the small beach watching the canoers go by.

We were also introduced to the delight that is a Scops Owl, they sound a little like a lorry reversing (Here is a YouTube video I found of the noise). They tend to start beeping JUST as your about to turn the light out to go to sleep…and then they carry on and on and on, talking to each other from across the river. But if you get one near your tent, you aint getting no sleep!

We are currently in the South of France, I will do another blog post shortly on our time here, we're having a mini holiday inside our big holiday. See you soon!
