Pont d'Arc Camping le Clapas
After spending 4 nights in the Dordogne region we headed further East to a campsite in the Ardéche area, we found the site in Cool Camping and figured it would be a good stop off before we head down to the south coast. It was the longest drive we’ve done yet on this trip - 6 and a half hours, and it was one of scariest drives too! We had to go directly through the middle of the parc national des Cévennes so we were right up in the mountains on these little windy roads with no barriers either side. The French obviously think this is just like any other road and still drive at 100km per hour, whilst on their phones and eating a sandwich. Casual. Even though it was scary the views were unbelievable. We stayed at Camping Le Clapas which is situated right on the Ardéche river with its own little private beach and it was a really lovely campsite. The man on reception (not sure if he was the owner) was the nicest French person we’ve met, so helpful and very welcoming.

We soon figured that the area is very much aimed towards holiday makers, there were campsites all over the place but luckily ours was a nice small one with barely anyone about. The biggest draw of this location is canoeing and kayaking, where we were on the river there seems to be a stretch of light rapids and some amazing views along the way. We took a walk into Vallon Pont d'arc one day where they were having a market selling the usual err… products, that you would find at any market in any country.

We ordered pastries and baguettes most mornings at the campsite and enjoyed some time at the tent, catching up on washing and reading our books.

A short drive away from the campsite is Pont d’Arc which is so beautiful, we took a little picnic of more bread, more cheese, more butter and some crisps and ate it down on the small beach watching the canoers go by.

We were also introduced to the delight that is a Scops Owl, they sound a little like a lorry reversing (Here is a YouTube video I found of the noise). They tend to start beeping JUST as your about to turn the light out to go to sleep…and then they carry on and on and on, talking to each other from across the river. But if you get one near your tent, you aint getting no sleep!

We are currently in the South of France, I will do another blog post shortly on our time here, we're having a mini holiday inside our big holiday. See you soon!
